Your child's skin is red, itchy, and dry. Nights are spent scratching and crying. Sound familiar? In many families with children, this is a frustrating daily reality. Countless doctor's visits, cream trials, and dietary changes have been tried, but no lasting relief is found. This story is familiar to us from dozens of customer meetings. Often, the culprit is sought from within or from external allergens, but one obvious factor is overlooked: water. Yes, precisely the water we use to wash our children daily. More and more parents have found a surprising solution by installing a high-quality shower filter in their bathroom.
"We tried all the creams, but nothing helped" – a familiar story in many families
When a child has sensitive or atopic skin, parents often feel they are running out of options. Pharmacy shelves become familiar with basic creams, cortisone, oils, and special detergents. They might provide temporary relief, but the problem returns as soon as treatment stops. Many notice symptoms worsening significantly after the evening wash: the skin flares up red, and itching begins immediately.
Parents feel guilt and helplessness. A common mistake is to focus on treating the symptom, not its cause. If the skin repeatedly gets irritated after a shower, it is logical to find out what is actually coming from the shower.
Finnish tap water is among the best drinking water in the world, but that doesn't mean it's perfect for the skin. It is precisely a child's thin and sensitive skin that reacts strongly to substances in the water that we cannot see with the naked eye.
Why does shower water irritate a child's skin?
Although water looks clear, it carries many skin-irritating ingredients. These are the most typical culprits we encounter in our client work:
-
Chlorine: Water treatment plants use chlorine to destroy bacteria. It is essential for water safety, but on the skin, it is a harsh chemical that removes the skin's natural protective oils. The result is dryness, tightness, and itching.
-
Heavy metals and rust: Water travels for kilometers through pipes before reaching your home. Especially from old pipes, tiny particles such as rust and heavy metals detach into the water, clogging skin pores and causing irritation.
-
Limescale: Hard, calciferous water is a nuisance for many Finns. Limescale not only leaves stains on shower walls but also forms a film on the skin. This film prevents the absorption of moisturizing creams, makes the skin dry, and worsens atopic eczema.
A child's skin is about 20–30% thinner than an adult's, and its own protective mechanism is still underdeveloped. Therefore, it reacts much more strongly to these irritants.
How does a shower filter work and what does it remove?
A shower filter is a simple device installed between the shower hose and the shower head. Its task is to capture harmful particles from the water before they reach the skin.
Our effective filter is a sediment filter, which operates on a mechanical basis: it filters out all particles from the water that are larger than 5 microns (0.005 mm). For comparison, a human hair is about 50–70 microns thick. The filter is therefore extremely dense.
In practice, the filter effectively collects from the water:
-
Rust and sand
-
Metal particles detaching from plumbing
-
Solid limescale particles and other impurities
Many are shocked to see how quickly a initially sparkling white filter turns brown or grey. It is concrete proof of all that flows in the water – and which, without a filter, would end up directly on the skin.
Customer experience: How did Laura's family get rid of the itching?
Laura contacted us last spring due to the persistent skin problems of her 4-year-old son, Elias. His knee creases and arms were raw from scratching, and nights were restless due to the itching.
"We had tried everything. Doctors' creams brought temporary relief, but the problem always returned. It felt like the evening wash was the worst, after which the unbearable scratching would start," Laura said.
After reading about shower filters, she skeptically decided to try one. According to Laura, the installation was surprisingly easy: old shower head off, filter in between, and head back on. It took less than five minutes.
The results didn't show overnight, but the change was clear. "Already after the first week, I noticed that Elias didn't have to scratch himself immediately after showering. After a month of use, his skin had calmed down, the redness was gone, and the broken skin areas began to heal," Laura rejoiced.
Three months later, Laura sent a picture of the used filter. It was brown. "I can't believe we've been washing our child with water like that. This has been the best single purchase for Elias's skin well-being."
Boost treatment with moisturizing aroma gel
Simply purifying water is a big step, but we wanted to offer more. That's why we specialize in Aroma Sense shower heads, which can be combined with a filter and a conditioning aroma gel cartridge.
These are not just any scent capsules, but rather masterpieces of Korean cosmetic expertise for skin care during a shower. The gels contain four effective and natural ingredients:
-
Aloe Vera: Soothes and moisturizes.
-
Snail mucin: Effectively regenerates and repairs skin.
-
Milk protein: Brightens and softens.
-
Vegetable glycerin: Binds moisture to the skin and prevents it from drying out.
Together with filtration, this combination transforms the daily shower from an irritating chore into a therapeutic ritual. First, the water is purified of impurities, after which skin-soothing ingredients are added. This way, the shower becomes a comprehensive care experience.
If your family is struggling with dry and sensitive skin, the solution may be closer and simpler than you think. Our experience shows that a shower filter is one of the easiest and most effective changes for your child's – and the whole family's – skin well-being. A seemingly small change in water quality can bring the greatest relief.
Frequently asked questions
How often should the shower filter be changed?
The filter should be changed approximately every 3–4 months in a family of four. However, the replacement interval depends entirely on local water quality and consumption. When the filter is clearly stained brown or grey, or if the water pressure drops, it is time to change it.
Does the shower filter fit all showers?
Yes. The shower filters we sell use the most common standard thread (G1/2"), so they fit almost all hand showers and shower hoses in Finnish homes. Installation can be done without tools in a few minutes.
Can a filter really help with atopic skin?
A shower filter is not a medicine and does not cure atopy, but it can significantly alleviate symptoms. By removing mechanically irritating impurities from the water, such as rust, metals, and solid limescale particles, it reduces stress on the skin. This helps the skin maintain its own natural protective layer. Many of our customers suffering from atopic skin have found significant relief from this.
What is the difference between a sediment filter and other filters?
The sediment filter we use is a mechanical filter that physically stops solid particles such as rust, sand, and limescale flakes. It is an effective first step in improving water quality when there are visible impurities in the water. It is important to understand that a mechanical sediment filter does not remove dissolved substances in water, such as chlorine. For this purpose, other types of filters exist, such as activated carbon filters.
Does the filter affect water pressure?
A new and clean filter practically does not affect water pressure. If you notice the pressure dropping over time, that's a good sign. It means the filter has done its job and collected a lot of impurities. A drop in pressure is the clearest indication that it's time to install a new, clean filter.
Are the aroma gels safe for children?
Yes. The aroma gels we use are made from high-quality and natural cosmetic ingredients, such as aloe vera and vegetable glycerin. They are gentle and designed to moisturize and care for the skin. However, as with any new cosmetic product, it is good to ensure that the child does not have an oversensitivity to any specific ingredient.
